HISTORY OF BEACH POLO
It all started on the sands of Dubai…
For centuries, Polo was only perceived as a grass-based sport, played on fields so large that it was easy for the spectators to feel detached from the action of the game.
This all changed when the first game of snow polo was played at St. Moritz, Switzerland, which brought a sense of freshness to the sport. The concept of snow polo became the inspiration for Sam Katiela, founder of Beach Polo:
“If they can bring Polo to the frozen lake, we can play polo on the beach!”
Thus, in 2004, the idea came to life and Beach Polo was born on the sands of Dubai, with mamemo organizing the annual tournaments, which helped increase the understanding of the sport and change the perception of traditional Polo. From that one event in Dubai in 2004, Beach Polo has inspired many similar tournaments in more than 36 destinations worldwide.
Beach Polo changed the dynamics of the sporting experience, by creating a modern take on an old and privileged social experience. While Beach Polo does and will always reflect the prestige of standard Polo, it offers a different challenge for the players and the audience can feel the game in a totally new level of experience.
Beach Polo Cup Dubai has also earned numerous awards, including WOW Awards Asia, Middle East Special Events Awards, and the coveted Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award Order of Merit. It has also gained the official support, including the Patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Sports Council over several years, which has further elevated the recognition of the sport on a local and international level.
To date, Beach Polo Cup Dubai has been setting the benchmark not only as a Polo event, but as an international sporting experience and we continue to find ways to innovate and move with the times.
